I was making my way from Brentwood to the freeway when I saw something that almost made me drive onto a light post. It was a sign that said “Coming soon, 136,000 sqft Lowe’s Home Improvement store”. Now you’re probably thinking, so what? Well, what shocked me was that they’re building this store directly across the street from Home Depot. Not just any HD, either — when it opened last year it was the largest in the world (137,000 sqft). So now we have two HUGE hardware megastores right across the street from each other. HD is in Brentwood while Lowe’s is in Antioch. In a way I’m glad to see Lowe’s, as I hate Home Depot passionately. But this is only going to make traffic congestion on the main drag there even worse. How about some decent places to eat instead?
Update: Turns out the Lowe’s is acutally 163,000 square feet. My God!

    • Hmmm. Don’t you think the Lowes will feel inferior, checking in at 1K less in square footage? I don’t why that random thought jumped out at me, but then my way of thinking is never conventional!
BTW… been checking out your site for some time. The photography is beautiful.

    • Lowes can be half the size and I’d still go there. I hate Home Depot that much. Let’s just say that I had a bad experience there a few months ago involving finding silicone spray. Though I do appreciate the self checkout.
And I’m glad to see some new commenters around here, the old ones seemed to have disappeared!

    • No Jeff, some of us are still lurking about.

    • uuugg. urban. sprawl.
p.s. I’m here! I just don’t catch up my blogs like I used to.

    • It’s horrific enough to have so many of the same chain stores replicating across the country, now they have to be super-sized in a showdown on opposite sides of the street each other! I kind of miss the old Mom-n-Pop stores with different and varied stuff to choose from. Yes, they were more expensive and not necessarily one stop shopping, but at least they weren’t all clones of each other. Yeah I know I’m ranting on a soapbox (on an ancient topic no less). I’ll go away now…
