Europe Trip Day 7: Olympia
Posted on July 14th, 2006 6 comments
Today’s stop was Katakolon, Greece — the port for Olympia. Ancient Olympia
was the site of the first Olympic Games back in 776 BC. While a lot of the
site was destroyed in earthquakes and floods, there’s still much to see. Click
the link to see some photos from my day there.Tomorrow is the day I’ve been waiting for: Santorini!
Morning in Katakolon, Greece
Now we’re at the ancient city of Olympia

Entrance to the stadium
50,000 people once filled this stadium watching events like running, discus,
and javelin throwing
The starting line is made of marble

There’s a bit of mosaic left on the floor here
Lots of column pieces
And finally some decent photos of the ship!

Oh, you HAVE been updating your travel blog! The link at the DCRP only points to day 5, and so for the last few days I thought you had not posted an update. I had to do a little exploring to find days 6 and 7.
You only brought one lens with you? That surprises me! I would have guessed you would have brought several. I have an EOS 10D, and I always like to bring one versatile lens (like you are using) plus one lens that can shoot in very low light plus one really long zoom lens. 85mm wouldn’t be quite enough zoom for me.
I’ve always been curious to know what all those Roman columns held up. Was there a roof on top of those columns? Wood, stone, or what? I would love to see an artists conception of what some of those Roman buildings looked like in their heyday. -
I only brought one lens so I didn’t have to haul a bunch of stuff with me in the heat. A few times I wished that I had the Canon 10-20 lens, though.

Hi Jeff, thanks for sharing your trip with us. The photos are fantastic and so are the places you visit. Is the 20D your favorite camera since you brought that on this trip. Enjoy your trip.

Ancient Olympia is a nice place where the Olypmic games started from, along with the ancient theater. It is even more fascinating when ancient theatrical plays by are held there at night.
By the way, the column style is called Korinthian and not Roman. It is the same column style used to built the Greek Parthenon in Athens 4000 years BC.
The Greek civilization is preceding the Roman and this column style got the name from ancient Korinth, a town around 90Km west of Athens where the columns of these style appear first.
