Frustration
Posted on October 20th, 2006 8 commentsIf there’s one thing I pride myself on in my business life, it’s the fact that I’m not afraid to call a spade a spade. Or, in this case, if a camera sucks, I’m going to say it. I was trying to finish up my review of the Samsung NV10 when I looked at the other reviews on the web to see if their results matched mine. If you just read the text alone, you’d think that the NV10 was the greatest thing since sliced bread. They gloss over the flaky, unneeded interface and the crummy photo quality, and it gets a great score.
My review as not going to be nearly so positive. Which makes me wonder how people will judge me (there’s that social anxiety kicking in). I don’t think I’m too critical — that’s my job, right? I wish other writers would step up to plate and be honest, instead of sugar coating things. Samsung is one of my biggest advertisers, but I’m not afraid to say that the NV10 isn’t so hot. I just wish there was more agreement in the community.

Nothing to worry about – I think you’re perfectly right. I’ve been looking at sample images at several different reviews and they all look the same: VERY noisy and so soft that they almost look out of focus…

Hey there,
I first starting reading your website way back 2001. While perhaps less polished than others’ sites, it was your candor that was the #1 reason why I kept coming back. More specifically, it was that you gave a very personal and less robotic description of your reaction to your reviewed cameras. Perhaps the soul searching you sometimes do on your personal blog is also an indication of why your review site is so appealing – you’re very honest about your response to cameras, and everything else in life too. If something sucks – you say it sucks (not a lot of denial going on).
Also, as a camera enthusiast, I keenly recognize bias or when a review stretches to call a mediocre camera good. One of my bookmarks has been called “Sellout Ste….’s” for a long time for exactly that reason. I still go the site, but it gets a lot less hits from me because the reviews have less integrity.
Cheers,

If a brand manufacturer only likes to see good reviews, you might as well start a section “Sponsored Review” just for them.
Honestly speaking, knowing the weakness of their own product is definitely a plus because that’s what make their next product better! -
You’ve been doing this for years and you’ve got to have hundreds of camera reviews on the site. You’re EXTREMELY well qualified to judge whether or not a camera is any good. If you think a camera isn’t good, it isn’t good.

Your integrity is what makes you and your reviews so unique. There are too many reviewers out there that never saw a camera they didn’t like. Thank goodness you aren’t like the rest! Keep up the good work,Jeff.

Hey Jeff,
I only came across your site a couple days ago while looking to upgrade from my S1 IS (http://www.signaturesound.ca/photos/WoodsBike.JPG). Your site shows a level of integrity and hard work that’s increasingly hard to come by these days. If a camera sucks you deserve the right to say so and your readers will only further respect your honesty.
Keep up the great work and thanks for the Disney pix!….they were a great reminder of a couple of childhood trips to Disney World, and made me even more anxious to bring our daughter (seen on the linked photo) there for March Break ‘08!
Looking forward to your S600FD review…Cheers!

hey Jeff!,
don’t worry a darn thing about other websites and reviews….
…DCResource is the best place in the world for a honest and coherent review of a digital camera…
I don’t know for the rest of the world, but I expect a review to be critical and accurate…. and I’ll never trust a review that’s only positive.
Apart from that there’s common sense, and I cannot understand some raves I’ve read in other websites about this camera followed by some crappy pictures taken with it. I just felt the review was completely biased.
Now I’m going to read your review, but I know it will be as great and accurate as all the others.
Keep up with the excellent work… believe me, you’re the very best in the digital camera review world.
