Because everyone else is doing it…
Death Valley Trip 2010
Death Valley (Day 2)
Apr 7th
Here are the rest of the photos taken from our second day in Death Valley National Park. I hope you like sand!
- Lots of long, straight roads, as you’d imagine
- The mountains got a fresh coat of snow the day before
- Nice view of the desert
- Our rental truck handled some VERY rough roads
- An actual year-round waterfall in DV
- A coot (I think) at the bottom of the waterfall
- Sand dunes!
- More cool patterns
- In the low spots in the dunes, the sand hardened like this. Reminds me of a tortoise shell.
- Can you spot the animal tracks?
- Reminded me of the Great Wall of China
- Nice gradients
- Artsy B&W shot
- Me at the top of the tallest dune
- More wildflowers
- Taken inside Titus Canyon
- Looking out the mouth of Titus Canyon near sunset (HDR)
- Orange glow at sunset
Mojave Desert attractions
Apr 5th
Since we didn’t want to make the long drive to Death Valley two days in a row, today we did attractions about an hour to our south, in the heart of the Mojave Desert.
First up was a quick stop at the airplane retirement home in Mojave. Pretty neat, would love to walk around all those planes!
After that we went to the Exotic Feline Breeding Compound’s Feline Conservation Center in Rosamond, CA. If you like wild cats, this is the place. From bobcats to leopards, they have them all.
Finally, we went to the Desert Tortoise Conservation Area. Unfortunately, it was too cold for any reptiles to be out (which thankfully includes snakes), so it was just desert. Still, it was a nice walk in a stark, but beautiful place.
- Airplane graveyard in Mojave
- The big guys
- Not sure who the orange ones belonged to
- Peacock at the Exotic Feline Breeding Compound
- I think this is an Ocelot. All of these were taken through fences.
- This is a Serval
- This might be a Margay (I can’t remember all of them).
- Northern Chinese Leopard
- Black Leopard
- Another Leopard
- A puma/cougar/mountain lion — not something I want to run into on a hike
- Snow Leopards?
- Mojave Desert beauty
- Wildflowers
- Wildflowers and snowy moutains
Death Valley (Day 1)
Apr 5th
Over the Easter holiday I’m down in southeastern California visiting Death Valley and the surrounding desert areas. My old college roommate and I are spending two days in DV and one in the Mojave Desert area. Here are the photos from Day 1 in Death Valley:
- On the way from Ridgecrest to Death Valley
- Nice view from the same spot
- The mountains are all kinds of crazy colors
- Artsy shot
- Pupfish
- Salt Creek… yes, water in Death Valley
- One of the few birds we saw
- It’s almost the peak season for wildflowers
- Cool flower
- Badwater, the lowest point in the U.S., if not the western hemisphere
- Mix of dirt and salt
- No, this isn’t a mountain range. It’s salt and dirt, taken from ground level.
- The salt looks more like snow
- The southern half of the park has the most flowers
- More flowers
- Ruins of an old mill
- Artsy shot #2
- Great rocks
- Nice color mix
- More flowers
- It was insanely windy up here
- They mean it
- Not where I’d want to be in a flash flood
- Looks like an arch, but it’s just another color of rock
- Cool rocks
- Artsy shot #3
- Furnace Creek Inn
- View from Zabriskie Point
- View from the other side
- Overlooking Badwater from Dante’s View at sunset
