Jeff's New House Journal
August 20, 2003

Today was my framing inspection -- the last one before they put in the wallboard. I brought my dad this time, and we arrived 15 minutes late (hit EVERY red light on the way there). Thankfully Matt, the superintendent, was still there.

We started by going over my options sheet, to make sure everything was correct. I asked him about the speaker pre-wiring that I wanted, which was not offered when I selected my options. Turns out that now it's offered, but I'm too late to get it (grr). So now I have to do it after that house is finished. Move-in is now early November, by the way.

After all that, we took a walk around. Matt explained everything in great detail, and I didn't understand most of what he was talking about (that's why I brought dad).

Here's the front. As you can see, the shingles (concrete) are ready to go on the roof. They are a dark gray color, and I think the house will be a brownish-gray as well, rather than the lighter brown color shown in my image on the top of this page.

There's actually a dragonfly in this picture.

All the HVAC and electrical stuff is installed. Those are recessed lights and an heating vent.

The orange pipes are for the fire sprinklers. Apparently if the sprinklers go off, an alarm on the side of the house goes off.

My dad checking out the enormous window in the office.

Here is the super family room, looking toward the office. Three more big windows here... this room will have a lot of light.

The kitchen. The counters and appliances will all be on the wall there, and all the electrical and plumbing is ready.

Speaking of plumbing, here's the laundry room.

And the master bath. Tub on the left, shower on the right.

Bathroom #2 has a toilet (that hole is where it will go) and a shower/tub.

My second (guest) bedroom had a bit of a problem. They forgot to install a ceiling lamp. Luckily my dad caught it, and they called the electrician over to a spot for one.

In the walk-in closet, we found the Home Director box already installed. This is your "hub" for structured wiring.

Here's the back of the house, with the master bedroom on the left. As you can see, they figured out that I wasn't supposed to have a sliding door there, and they put in a window instead.

And here's the sliding door from the kitchen.

We found out a little more about the landscaping I ordered. There will be a patio right out of that sliding door, and it'll be as wide as the area you see, and then 15 feet back away from the house. Grass will surround it. Much to our surprise, they won't be dumping bark in the rest of the yard... it'll be waiting for me to plant my own stuff. That works for me.

My neighbors' houses are coming along nicely.

So that's it for this time. In about three weeks, I won't be able to go inside the house until it's finished. So I'll probably visit in about two weeks one last time.

Now if I could only get interest rates to start going down again...
