March PowerWatch News Archive
(Up to April News Archive)
Tuesday, March 31
- I discovered last night that BottomLine Distribution has a RailGun
G3/250 card for $799 (though the first 100 orders are $699). They claim
full compatibility for Power systems, except Powerbase, the cache is 1.5 :
1, and you can get it to 275MHz. May be worth a look?
- Yeah, I know.. things are dead lately on the news front.. I'm working on
it!
Thursday, March 26
- Sorry for the lack of updates recently -- I'm on vacation, remember? A few
things I need from you: First, if you had to get a new power supply, where
did you get it? Secondly, the same question for hard drive mounting rails--
a lot of people have had trouble with that. Drop Jeff a line if you can contribute to
either of these special reports.
- Late update: Sorry folks, we're going to have to cancel chat and
postpone it for a week. We had a licensing issue with the software and nobody
could join in. So, next thursday, same time, same place. Very sorry, Jeff.
Friday, March 20
- I am very pleased to announce that both the TechTalk and PowerSource databases
in our PowerTech section are up 24 hours a day.
These two databases, along with the DCRP database (soon), are now hosted on
a reliable server courtesy of MacNN.
- Finals are only halfway done! I'll update the power supply report and the
DecisionOne stuff next week! One more quarter and I'm outta here! ;-)
Monday, March 16
- Looking for a replacement Power Supply? Check out our special
report about places that you may find them. BTW, if you have contact info
for any of the places mentioned, please let me know so I can share this info.
- MacInTouch has news on new G3 upgrades
from PowerLogix and NewerTech.
Saturday, March 14
- The problems with the message boards appear to be over. The database which
stores the messages got corrupted and we almost lost a good deal of the DCRP
messages. The boards may go down again later while we upgrade to WebX 3.0.
- The always helpful Jim Stoneburner discovered that Apple has Power Computing
manuals (for both computers and peripherals), training materials, and tech
support files stashed away on their ftp site. Check 'em out! (Update: This link should work,
finally).
Thursday, March 12
- I'm trying to gather up a list of places PowerCC users can get power supplies.
DecisionOne and AllMac don't count--we know they do. If you've bought one
personally, or are a reseller who sells them, please let
me know and I'll post this info for our readers.
- I'll have the DecisionOne "Suggestion" List ready by weeks end.
- PowerWatch Chat -- two weeks from today. Be there!
- Am I the only one who thought the new
Apple ad rocked? Though I'm still bitter about the whole PowerCC buyout,
Jobs is doing the right thing with these ads. One suggestion: Get that $1000
G3 out soon!
- Finals are next week. You know what that means.
Monday, March 9
- Tired of DecisionOne being your only choice for service? AllMac has started
their You're Not Alone if You Own a Clone program:
- We would like to be known as an alternative to Decision 1 in doing Power
Computing repairs. Allmac (aka 800-WE-FIX-MACS -- "The number to
remember for ALL Macintosh parts") has hired some ex-Power Computing
techs and will be offering complete parts and repair service on all Power
Computing machines and accessories. Currently, we have the parts in stock
to do most (if not all) repairs on Mac clone computers. Our company is
in a unique position to do these repairs since our relationship with Power
goes back to the beginning - we were one of the early investors in Power
Computing dating back to July of 1995.
- Please note that like DecisionOne, we are requesting customers to send
their units IN for repair, though we will accept bare power supplies and
motherboards (unlike Decision 1). Our pricing is quite competitive, for
example, power supplies start @ $99.95 and motherboard repairs start @
$249.95. We offer 1 year warranties also, alongwith extended warranties.
We will do the repairs within 24 hours and ship it back Fedex. Customers
are requested to call in for RMA numbers before shipping the product to
us. We also have 3 stores in the Bay Area where they can walk in the computers
for while-you-wait service.
- Ummm... I'll be graduating this June and.. ummm... well, just look at
my resume, darn it. ;-)
Monday, March 2
- My computer is fixed!! The appropriate parties know who they are ;-)
- Jorn Engstrom has set up a mailing list for PowerCC users in Sweden (hey,
I've been there!):
- The lists address is power-list@tripnet.se.
You can subscribe to the list by sending an email to majordomo@tripnet.se
with the following text in the body of the email: subscribe power-list@tripnet.se
<your email address here>.
- If you haven't yet given me your "how DecisionOne can improve the most"
request yet, please do so!
Sunday, March 1
- Check out some great pictures I took this weekend (you can guess where).
