Your Reviews

Sasha Pave gives us this review of a PowerTower 166:

  • First let me say that this is by far the fastest system I've ever used. I still can't get over how fast Photoshop launches, BBEdit scrolls, and Marathon plays. Here is my config:
  • Standard cup 'o' joe:
    • PowerTower 166
    • 2g HD, 8x CD
  • Plus:
    • 64mb RAM
    • IMS 2mb Video (tt128P2) (purchased aftermarket)
  • What a screamer! However, I do have a few notes for those upgrading RAM and adding an IMS card on their own:
  • MAKE SURE YOU ARE GETTING 2k REFRESH DIMMS! A vendor sent me 1k refresh DIMMS which didn't work with the existing stock RAM. Kingston modules are a bit slimmer than Techworks, which allows easier sliding into the DIMM slots.
  • I purchased an IMS Twin Turbo 2mb card from Custom Mac (http://www.custom-mac.com) for $189 so I can run a second monitor. These cards do not appear to be the same as the ones Power ships with, as they only have a VGA port in the back, and no Mac video port. However, it seems to work just fine. Even better with the latest driver (thanks Jeff!).
  • I'm still having one problem with the card: I can't seem to get my 17in monitor to run at 640x480. I get a distorted image. On my 14in monitor it works fine, and I can get 832x624 and 1024x768 resolutions without a problem. Has anyone else had this problem?
  • Coming from my previous Mac, a 7200/90, this machine kicks some serious ass. Here is a quick summary of my likes and dislikes with this new machine.
  • Good:
    • Speed
    • Compatibility (flawless)
    • Choice of quality OEM components (CD-ROM, HD etc.)
    • VGA and Mac video ports internally
  • Could improve:
    • CPU Case: Functional, but not quite as elegant as Apple (okay, so I'm spoiled :-)
    • Keyboard: Works fine and at least it's included, but the key action is too, well, PeeCee
  • Three fans? I guess I'll never have an overheating problem.
